Successful visual execution of a large project within a reasonable time frame and budget requires a lot of typographic formatting. Letter spacing, word spacing, size, leading, etc., must be incorporated into style sheets, tags, macros or whatever else makes up the documents design structure. Inadequate formatting greatly increases the amount of hand alterations in a document. In turn, these alterations greatly increase the likelihood that stylistic or spelling errors will be introduced, therefore necessitating more proofreading.
For maximum efficiency and security, much of the document structure can be defined by the author or editor in the word processing software and carried over into the page layout/typesetting software.
